I have noticed a large influx of newer players, and I want to address good players v bad players. Guys and gals, this has nothing to do with skill, it is about fairness, personal honor, dedication to team and sport. Here are my contrast.
Calling shots
A good player looks for reasons to go ahead and call dead. A bad players finds justification in not calling. For example: We were at a game with ReconOne. A gentleman who I will not name here was fighting alongside Bullfrog. Bullfrog heard and saw this gentleman, who was his team mate for the game, ignoring shots. BF said, "Hey, those are hitting you, I can hear it and see it. The guy says, "that is hitting me, but not hard enough, I only call if I feel pain." BF said, "The rules are if you are hit anywhere, you call it." The guy ignored him. In my opinion, that makes Bullfrog a superior player, and a credit to our team. It makes the other guy an ass, and someone I could care less to ever see again. Here is the rule of thumb, if you think you got hit, you probably did. Ask the guys shooting at you, "hey, did that hit me?" IT IS MUCH BETTER TO CALL HIT ON A MAYBE THAN TO NOT CALL A GOOD SHOT.
On the other hand, ALWAYS GIVE THE ENEMY THE BENEFIT OF DOUBT. Every game, I hear someone bitching about some guy, who was through trees, behind something, not calling shots. I ask, "Did you see bbs bouncing off of them?" Almost always, I hear, "No, but I know I got them!" No you do not. You don't know for sure. A leaf will throw a shot off. Be sure before you get your panties in a wad, otherwise you look like an ass and become a bad player. Which brings me to my next point.
DON'T BITCH TO EVERYONE WHO WILL LISTEN, EXCEPT FOR THE PERSON YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH. Again, folks will come to me and say, "that guy is not calling shots, something should be done!". I ask, "Did you tell them you felt you hit them and they shrugged the shot?". Again, "No, I am just too mad." Number one, you shouldn't get mad, this is for fun. You should act like an adult, call them to the side, tell the PLAYER of your concerns, and go from there. Two, it makes you look like a passive aggressive three year old, who is afraid to confront those that have wronged them. I am not saying run up in their faces yelling, "CHEATER, I SHOT YOU, YOU SUCK!!" Just calmly ask them why they didn't call the shot, and THEN if you get a less than satisfactory answer, come and report them to event staff, and it should be handled from there. Then, we can ask questions from other trusted players about the player, learn of problems in the past, etc, and make a ruling if the player should be banned from the field. Yes, banned from the field. From what I have gathered, and I KNOW it to be the case at Dave's, you act like an ass, refuse to call shots, don't follow the rules, go into unauthorized areas, etc, we will ask you not to come back. After a year, we haven't had to do so, hope we never have to, just remember that if you are playing at a private field, as in TFAT, 4/20, ReconOne, Steel City, then those teams can ask you never to come back.
Good players help out, and clean up after themselves. If you are at an event, always ask if anything needs doing. The folks there will appreciate it. Clean up after yourselves. Fairies don't come out of the woods and set the games up, sign people in, chrono weapons, cut trails, and haul garbage after an event, PEOPLE DO. Help out when you can.
Listen to the mission commanders and leave ego aside. Kill counting as a personal yardstick is fine with me, being obnoxious about it is not. For example, Houston says to me, "I have five kills and two deaths that game, not bad.", I consider that to be fine. Running around after the game or scenario saying, "I shot you and you, and all of you, you guys suck!" is not what a good player does. If you died five times but only had one kill, and did your job helping your team win, then you have had a good game. What good is it to get 9 kills if you abandon your assignement and allow the enemy access to an objective?
Shoot for the body and legs if you can. If you can help it, don't shoot folks in the head. It hurts. I understand that in fortifications and other obstacles, all you get is head shots, and you take what you get, but always be mindful of shooting folks in the torso and legs. I hate seeing bloody ears and leaking welts and chipped teeth. Folks always ask me, "What do you have to wear for protection?" I always say, "Shatterproof goggles or glasses and a bandanna around my face and ears." A piece of cloth is the difference between a bloody welt and and a little sting. Most folks don't wear anything, but I suggest you do. Everytime I haven't, I invariably pay the price.
Well, I gotta crash, but in closing, let me say, be nice. Have fun. Treat other players the way you want to be treated. Help the folks out running the event, otherwise, where you gonna play? and again, have fun.
